Birjand, Iran – May 31, 2025 – The Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Herat, Alireza Marhamati, emphasized that health tourism represents a strategic opportunity to strengthen ties between Iran and Afghanistan, with South Khorasan Province playing a central role due to its shared border with Afghanistan’s Farah Province.
Marhamati made these remarks during a joint meeting on Sunday, May 31, 2025, held in Birjand with the participation of Mawlawi Ghawsuddin Rahbar, Governor of Farah, the Governor of South Khorasan, and senior provincial officials. The discussions focused on the medical and healthcare potential of the region and prospects for expanding cross-border medical cooperation.
Highlighting the deep historical, cultural, religious, and ethnic bonds between the peoples of both nations, Marhamati stated that South Khorasan is uniquely positioned to serve as a gateway for expanded cooperation in healthcare and beyond.
He also noted Iran’s longstanding support for the Afghan people, particularly during years of conflict and instability, stressing that Iran has consistently provided humanitarian and medical assistance, despite its internal challenges.
Marhamati pointed to the broad medical services provided to Afghan patients in border regions, affirming the consulate’s full readiness to facilitate visa issuance and related consular services to support health tourism and medical collaboration.
He further highlighted the potential for broader cooperation between South Khorasan and Farah in areas such as economy, agriculture, trade, border affairs, and especially healthcare.
