Iran Expands IT Service Exports Across All Five Continents

An Iranian trade official says the country’s IT firms are exporting services worldwide. EAEU frameworks help engineering projects that require shipping materials—especially to Armenia—while high-value consulting and pure IT services continue to bring in foreign currency without goods exports.

Tehran: Iran has exported information-technology services to all five continents, according to Sohrab Salimi, head of the Knowledge-Based Products and Technical Engineering Services Office at the Trade Promotion Organization of Iran (TPO). He said the non-physical nature of IT work from software development to digital consulting has enabled companies to reach customers in Australia, the Americas, Canada, and neighbouring markets.

Commenting on export frameworks, Salimi noted that the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) arrangements can significantly support technical engineering projects that require shipping supplies, spare parts, or materials for example, bridge-construction projects destined for Armenia, an EAEU member. He added that these advantages do not apply to consulting-only projects where no goods are exported; nonetheless, such projects are considered high value-added and earn foreign currency through expertise delivered in the target country.

Salimi stressed that Iran’s export regulations for technical engineering services explicitly include IT, underscoring what he described as a large untapped capacity distinct from traditional civil and road-building services. He reported positive momentum across EAEU member states, and said domestic IT actors particularly software developers have ample room to expand their international footprint.
